As a Union fan (I promise no bias, as I love all the MLS) the Maurice Edu debacle has been quite interesting.
For those who don’t know what I am talking about, the Philadelphia Union offered the USMNT defensive-mid an offer of $1.2 Million to play for them. MLS then immidiatly stepped in and said that the Union can’t have nice things.
What the MLS basically did is steal candy from a baby that NEVER gets candy, but in all fairness they may be preventing a league-wide economic collapse because of players demanding pay raises.
Each side has an argument and the debate is hot right now. The Union want to spend the money, but MLS doesn’t think Maurice is good enough for a big contract (although he would be taking a $200k pay cut) that dwarves similar player’s contracts like Kyle Beckerman and Will Johnson.

The MLS is a shit show, they need to abandon the salary cap because unfortunately soccer doesn’t work that way
I wouldn’t say “shit show”, they just need some steady rules to follow. They need to stop playing favorites and have some set of rules apply to everyone. The salary cap is beneficial in that it keeps the play competitive across most teams, but when it isn’t raise in correlation with money teams CAN spend, it hurts the league more than it helps. I love my home team and love the league they are in, but it needs to grow with the times. MLS will be a top 3 league some day, and moves to get there are happing at an exponential rate it seems. They’re definitely issues, but every league has they’re flaws.
